Released August 31, 1987 on Epic: the follow-up to the best-selling album ever made, and the last Michael Jackson record produced by Quincy Jones. Jackson wrote nine of the eleven tracks himself and spent two years in the studio, which shows in every compressed second of it.

Five singles went to number one, a first for any album: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," and "Dirty Diana." "Smooth Criminal" became the anti-gravity lean and one of the most imitated performances in pop. The record sold over 35 million copies and launched a world tour that ran sixteen months.

Bad is where Jackson's control tightened, harder edges, more aggression, the funk pushed into rock territory, and the vocal performances at their most percussive.
