Released November 26, 1991 on Epic: Michael Jackson's eighth studio album and the first since 1975 made without Quincy Jones. Teddy Riley came in instead, bringing new jack swing with him, and the result reset Jackson's sound for a younger, harder-edged decade. He took writing credits on all but two of the fourteen tracks.
"Black or White" went to number one. "Remember the Time," "In the Closet," and "Heal the World" filled out four Top Ten singles, and the record sold north of 32 million copies worldwide. R&B, pop, rock, and industrial-tinged production sit alongside gospel balladry, an artist at his most restless and most ambitious. It won the Grammy for Best Engineered Album, and the engineering is the point: this is one of the most meticulously constructed pop records ever made, which is exactly why it belongs on vinyl.
