When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Released March 29, 2019 via Darkroom and Interscope, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? is Billie Eilish at seventeen, writing with her brother FINNEAS, who produced it in his small bedroom studio in Highland Park. It opens with her slurping saliva from her Invisalign aligners and laughing, and that's the manifesto: dressed-down avant-pop, close-miked whispers over sub-bass, skittering trap beats and the odd doo-wop piano aside, horror-film detail delivered with a deadpan grin. "bad guy" struts on finger snaps and a sardonic "duh" before collapsing into a half-time coda, "bury a friend" throbs with muted goth-R&B, "xanny" rolls its eyes at the party, and "when the party's over" strips down to stacked vocals and piano. "my strange addiction" even samples The Office.

It made a bedroom sound like the biggest room in pop. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 313,000 units, and "bad guy" went to No. 1 around the world. At the 62nd Grammys it won Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album, "bad guy" took Record and Song of the Year, Eilish won Best New Artist and FINNEAS Producer of the Year. She was the first woman, and only the second artist after Christopher Cross, to win all four general-field awards in one night, and at eighteen the youngest ever winner of Album of the Year.
