// Liner notes
The grandson of Egyptian singer Muharram Fouad builds his third album around the oud, and brings Mitski in for "Sanctuary."
Released March 21, 2025 via Communion, Every Dawn's a Mountain was written mostly in New York after Tamino's move from Belgium, recorded in a New Orleans church, a Brussels studio and hotel rooms on tour, and produced with longtime collaborator PJ Maertens, with Eric Heigle and Alessandro Buccellati co-producing. The oud leads more than on any record he has made, laying Egyptian scales under acoustic guitar and drone. Above it all sits that voice, three octaves of it, from a graveyard low to a falsetto that evaporates on contact.
"My Heroine" opens like a lullaby over softly picked guitar, "Babylon," first sketched at a soundcheck for a small Italian festival held inside a medieval castle, climbs from an ethereal drone to a peak that sounds cut from stone, and "Raven" bends toward his grandfather's scales. "Sanctuary" is the event: call and response with Mitski, two voices circling the same wound from opposite sides. "Dissolve" stretches past seven minutes, and "Amsterdam" closes on a muffled train announcement, a goodbye to the city where he studied. He calls it "the most harmonious record I've made to date." Here the heritage sounds like home.
