Released June 15, 2018 via MSMSMSM, Future Classic, and Transgressive: the only studio album SOPHIE released in her lifetime, a victory lap through every style she ushered in and then watched the zeitgeist absorb, hyperpop, deconstructed club, and everything the next decade borrowed from her. The deluxe vinyl edition arrived after months of digital-only release, a rare physical concession from an artist who kept her formats as elusive as her image.
"It's Okay to Cry" opens on pure pop perfection and her first appearance in her own visuals, before the record turns opaque: the junkyard dubstep of "Ponyboy" and "Faceshopping," the timestretched reverie of "Infatuation," and "Is It Cold in the Water?", the album's emotional summit, half torch song, half rave pressure. "Pretending" drifts through disorienting dystopic drone, and the kaleidoscopic "Immaterial" detonates the whole thesis into euphoric futurepop. Guest voices, Cecile Believe, Noonie Bao, Banoffee, blur into SOPHIE's own synthesis until you cannot tell who is singing, which is exactly the point. Grammy-nominated, and grown only larger in stature since her death in 2021.
