Californication (2LP)

Released June 8, 1999 via Warner Bros.: Red Hot Chili Peppers' seventh studio album and the record that returned John Frusciante to the band after seven years of departure, addiction, and recovery. Produced by Rick Rubin at Cello Studios in Hollywood, with bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and vocalist Anthony Kiedis completing the lineup that would define the band's next decade.

Fifteen tracks that sold over 15 million copies and pushed the band beyond its funk-punk template into atmospheric songwriting. "Scar Tissue," "Otherside," "Around the World," and the title track carried the album to global ubiquity.

The original 1999 CD master is one of the most-cited casualties of the loudness war. Vinyl pressings recover dynamic range that the brick-walled CD master flattened, which is why Californication reads as a different record on the right pressing.
