// Liner notes
The album behind "Cream," Prince's last No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, first sold in a holographic cover.
Released October 1, 1991 via Paisley Park and Warner Bros., Diamonds and Pearls is the first album Prince credited to the New Power Generation, recorded between July 1990 and May 1991 at Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Olympic in London and Larrabee in North Hollywood. With a full band behind him again, he swings from hard funk to glossy pop-rock, with hip-hop worked into the drums. Rosie Gaines's gospel-sized voice trades lines with his, and Tony M raps across half the record. "Gett Off" is the filthiest funk he put on a major single, "Cream" struts with a wink all the way to No. 1, the title track, a duet with Gaines, climbed to No. 3, and "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" is a quiet, sharp song about money and conscience.
It was his last true blockbuster, made by a man who had decided he needed a band again. The album reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200, topped the R&B albums chart, reached No. 2 in the UK, went double Platinum in the US and triple Platinum in the UK, and sold around seven million copies worldwide.
CD album, graded Near Mint, unsealed.
