// Liner notes
Mitski called it her most American album, and it gave her the first Billboard Hot 100 entry of her career.
Released September 15, 2023 via Dead Oceans, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We swaps the dramatic synths of Laurel Hell for acoustic guitar, a country twang and a 17-voice choir with strings, recorded live in the room with the band. Mitski and Drew Erickson arranged the choir and strings, and the songs open into widescreen goth-country. "Heaven" swoons like a ballad from an old Hollywood reel, "When Memories Snow" breaks over her like a storm front of strings, and "Buffalo Replaced" chugs with the weight of a freight train crossing the Midwest.
It is the warmest record she has made, and the most frightening. "My Love Mine All Mine" claims love as the one possession nobody can repossess, peaked at No. 26 on the Hot 100, reached the UK Top 10 and became the biggest song of her career. "I'm Your Man" turns devotion into a murder ballad, "The Frost" answers Hank Williams across seventy years of loneliness, and "I Love Me After You" closes the album walking toward self-acceptance with a swing in its hips. The album reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and No. 4 in the UK.
