Released August 31, 1987 via Epic: the follow-up to the best-selling album ever made, and the last Michael Jackson record produced by Quincy Jones. Jackson wrote nine of the eleven tracks himself. Recording ran from the first session at Westlake on January 5, 1987 to the last day of mixing on July 9, and every second of it is compressed tight.

Five singles went to number one, a first for any album: "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," and "Dirty Diana". "Smooth Criminal" became the anti-gravity lean and one of the most imitated performances in pop. This is where Jackson's control tightened, harder edges, more aggression, the funk pushed into rock territory, and the vocal performances at their most percussive.

This is the 2001 European Special Edition, remastered by Bernie Grundman and housed in a slipcase over a jewel case with a 20-page booklet. Three previously unreleased recordings: "Streetwalker," an outtake Jackson fought to keep on the original album, the Spanish-language "Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu," and "Fly Away." Plus a new three-part Quincy Jones interview on the making of the record.
