Released January 27, 2012 via Interscope and Polydor: Lana Del Rey's major-label debut and the record that fixed her aesthetic in place. "Video Games" had already broken her online by mid-2011, hitting iTunes #1 in nine countries and landing at #2 song of the year in Q Magazine before the album existed. Born to Die arrived as the proof of concept.
This is the Deluxe Edition: the original twelve tracks plus three bonus cuts ("Without You," "Lolita," "Lucky Ones") that extend the album's noir-pop atmosphere across a full 2LP gatefold pressing. Del Rey built a Hollywood-noir universe of cracked Americana, doomed romance, and orchestral-trap production. "Blue Jeans," "Off to the Races," "National Anthem," "Carmen," "Summertime Sadness," "Million Dollar Man," and the title track became the foundational text for everything sad-girl pop has done since. Woodkid directed the title track's video, and a follow-up remix EP brought in Damon Albarn and Clams Casino.
Critical reception in 2012 was polarized. Fourteen years later the album sits at the center of the 2010s pop canon and continues to outsell most of its peers on vinyl.
