Smithereens

Released November 4, 2022 via 88rising and Warner Records, Smithereens is nine songs in twenty-four minutes, the tightest record George Miller has made. It splits in two: introspective piano ballads up front, lo-fi DIY sketches on the back. The whole thing plays like pages torn from a notebook at three in the morning, grief, devotion and exhaustion sung close enough to the microphone to fog it.

"Glimpse of Us" carried it: a bare piano ballad about measuring a new love against a lost one, which spread across the internet in the summer of 2022, climbed into the Hot 100 Top 10 and topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand. "Die for You" and "Dissolve" push the same ache through synths and reverb, "Night Rider" and "Blahblahblah Demo" keep the grit of his earliest work, and "1AM Freestyle" closes on a sketch left deliberately raw. The man who once made comedy as Filthy Frank writes heartbreak here with no punchline at all. The album reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and went Gold in the US.
