// Liner notes

Frank Ocean's major-label debut, released six days after the open letter he posted on Tumblr.

Released July 10, 2012 via Def Jam, digitally first through iTunes with the CD a week later. On July 4, Ocean had published a letter about his first love, a man, and wrote of the songs: "I wrote to keep myself busy and sane. I wanted to create worlds that were rosier than mine." He produced much of it with Malay, with Pharrell Williams and Tyler, the Creator among the other hands, mostly at EastWest Studios in Hollywood.

It is a languid, unhurried record that swings from Stevie-style keyboard breeziness to 90s R&B to mystic psych rock to crunching 8-bit funk without thinking twice, its character studies told from shifting points of view: bored heirs on "Super Rich Kids" with Earl Sweatshirt, an addict on "Crack Rock," a love confession to a cab driver on "Bad Religion." André 3000 drops into "Pink Matter," and "Pyramids," nearly ten minutes long, slides from synth-funk to slow jam as it sets the fall of Cleopatra against a stripper bankrolling her pimp's ambitions. "Thinkin Bout You" came first, and "Lost" and "Super Rich Kids" followed it as singles.

Pitchfork's Jordan Sargent heard "a profound empath" behind it, and the record made Ocean a trailblazer for an artist's right to tell his own story. It debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 131,000 copies, won the Grammy for Best Urban Contemporary Album with a nomination for Album of the Year, was named the best album of 2012 by Billboard and The Guardian, among others, and later placed tenth on Pitchfork's list of the decade.

First official vinyl pressing, a limited 2025 edition from Ocean's own Blonded label: 180g 2LP in a gatefold jacket with alternative artwork. "White," with John Mayer on guitar, is left off this pressing.
