Released April 29, 2021 via Warp Records: Flying Lotus's score for the Netflix anime series, a three-year project he also executive produced. Six episodes built around the historical Yasuke, the African retainer who served Oda Nobunaga in late-16th-century Japan. LeSean Thomas directed for Studio MAPPA. LaKeith Stanfield voices the title character.
The score is the Grammy-winning Flying Lotus toolkit applied to a brief unlike anything else in his discography: synth melodies and machine-generated rhythm hybridized with taiko, hyōshigi, and West African percussion. "Black Gold" (with Thundercat) sits among twenty-plus cues that move through combat, mourning, and stillness without losing structural identity. A score that functions as a standalone Flying Lotus album while serving the show's Afro-Japanese, feudal-futurist world.
