// Liner notes
Fight Club cost over $60 million, made under $40 million in the US, and found its audience on DVD.
Released 15 October 1999 by 20th Century Fox, a month after its Venice premiere, Fight Club is David Fincher's adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk's debut novel, scripted by Jim Uhls. Edward Norton's unnamed narrator, an insomniac furnishing his flat from an IKEA catalogue, drifts through support groups for diseases he doesn't have until he meets Tyler Durden, Brad Pitt at his most feral, and the two start a fight ring in a bar basement. Helena Bonham Carter's Marla Singer, a fellow support-group tourist, completes the triangle as the brawls harden into Project Mayhem.
Fincher plants Tyler in the film before Norton meets him, as single frames spliced into four early scenes. Jeff Cronenweth shoots it in sickly greens and sodium yellows, and the Dust Brothers wire it to a breakbeat score that hands over to the Pixies' "Where Is My Mind?" for the final shot. Misread on release and canonised within a few years, it remains a pitch-black satire of consumer masculinity. Its one Oscar nomination went to its sound effects editing.
US single-disc widescreen edition by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, THX mastered, with four commentary tracks.
