Palestinian folk archives handed to a new generation of producers and rebuilt as electronic music in a two-week Ramallah residency.
Released January 17, 2020 via Mostakell, Electrosteen started in the Popular Art Centre's sound library in Ramallah: field recordings and archival tapes of urban, rural and Bedouin musicians, professional and amateur, gathered across the communities of historic Palestine. In 2017, young Palestinian producers and DJs moved into a shared house in Ramallah for two weeks and built original tracks out of that library, every one of them sampling the archive.
It sounds like a village wedding remembered through a club PA. Muqata'a opens with "Uru Salem," cutting Mehdi Haddab's electric oud and Walaa Sbait's voice against a grinding beat. Julmud folds Sbait into "Hadoo," Al Nather brings BLTNM's Shabjdeed onto "Yabnel 'Am," and Bruno Cruz sends "Algeriasteen" west across the Maghreb. Nasser Halahlih, a pioneer of the 2000s electronic scene, delivers "We Palestinians," and SAMA' closes with "Trinity." Produced by Rashid Abdelhamid with artistic direction by Sama' Abdulhadi, supported by the Popular Art Centre and the A.M. Qattan Foundation.
