Alligator Bites Never Heal (Translucent Hazel LP)

Released August 30, 2024 via Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol, Alligator Bites Never Heal packs nineteen tracks into under forty-seven minutes. It's steeped in the sweat and humidity of Doechii's Florida: boom bap, Miami jook, soul and synth-heavy club tracks, built by close to thirty producers across studios in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami and Manhattan. She raps like a stand-up comic who found a pulpit. "Nissan Altima" struts with raunchy early-2000s Miami confidence, "Catfish" comes out snarling, "Boiled Peanuts" rides jazzy drums, and "Bloom" slows into bossa nova and silk.

"Denial Is a River" is the centrepiece: a therapy session staged as a rap song, ending in mock hyperventilation. John Jay's cover photograph nods to Minnie Riperton's Adventures in Paradise. The tape reached No. 10 on the Billboard 200, her first Top 10, went Gold and won Best Rap Album at the 67th Grammys, the same night "Nissan Altima" was up for Best Rap Performance and Doechii for Best New Artist.
