Luck and Strange

Released September 6, 2024 via Sony Music, Luck and Strange is David Gilmour's first solo album in nine years, co-produced with Charlie Andrew at Medina Studio in Hove and Mark Knopfler's British Grove in London, with most of the lyrics by Polly Samson. The guitar tone is unmistakable, long bending notes that hang in the air past their own decay, and Andrew's irreverence loosens everything around it.

The title track grew out of a 2007 jam in Gilmour's barn with Richard Wright, who died the following year, and his keyboards drift through it like a presence in the next room. "Between Two Points," a 1999 song by the Montgolfier Brothers, hands lead vocal and harp to Gilmour's daughter Romany, and "The Piper's Call" drew comparisons to early Pink Floyd. The record dwells on age and mortality with the calm of someone who has made peace with both. It entered the UK chart at No. 1, his third solo No. 1, and Gilmour said he felt it was his best work since The Dark Side of the Moon.
