Analphabetapolothology (2LP)

Released January 8, 1998 via Jade Tree: the complete recorded works of Cap'n Jazz, the Chicago-area band that invented Midwest emo almost by accident and split before anyone caught up. Formed in Buffalo Grove, Illinois by high-school friends Tim Kinsella on vocals, Victor Villareal on guitar, Sam Zurick on bass, and Tim's younger brother Mike Kinsella on drums, the band released one album in spring 1995 and broke up on tour that same summer.

This anthology gathers everything, 34 tracks across two LPs: the full album, the singles, compilation cuts, and their gleefully unhinged cover of a-ha's "Take On Me." Villareal's tapped, tangled guitar lines, Tim Kinsella's yelped word-salad poetry, and a rhythm section that plays like a house collapsing in time signature. The blueprint the entire genre traced afterward.

The family tree alone justifies the shelf space: the members went on to The Promise Ring, Joan of Arc, Owls, Owen, and American Football. Every twinkly guitar and confessional yelp of the last three decades routes back through these sessions.
