// Liner notes
The debut EP that grew out of "Ocean Eyes," a song first posted online in 2015.
Released August 11, 2017 via Darkroom and Interscope, Don't Smile at Me is Billie Eilish at fifteen, written with her brother Finneas and recorded in his bedroom. It lays down the blueprint in eight songs: whispered vocals pushed against heavy bass, adolescent menace in one hand and raw tenderness in the other. "Ocean Eyes," Finneas's song first posted online in November 2015, floats like a crush caught on tape. "COPYCAT" opens with a sneer, "Bellyache" sets a confession of violence to a breezy guitar strum, "idontwannabeyouanymore" slows into a jazz-tinged ballad of self-loathing, and "Hostage" closes at its most unsettling and tender.
Plugged In called it "dreamy and depressing, enchanting and haunting," and every move Eilish made next is already here in miniature. It reached No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and No. 12 in the UK, went Platinum in the US, and "Bellyache" alone went double Platinum.
This is the limited crystal clear edition, the first international pressing in clear, on BioVinyl, which replaces the petroleum in standard vinyl with used cooking oil and waste gases. The packaging is FSC-certified recycled board printed with plant-based inks.
