Released August 11, 2017 via Darkroom and Interscope Records, don't smile at me is Billie Eilish's debut EP. She and her brother FINNEAS wrote the songs, and FINNEAS produced it alone. Its roots go back to November 2015, when "ocean eyes" went up on SoundCloud and YouTube and found an audience before there was a label or a release plan.
The record takes full advantage of Eilish's background as a choral singer. Her top lines are beautiful in their simplicity, and her ability to harmonise seems almost second nature, the harmonies stacked close and moving between grit and softness inside a single verse. "idontwannabeyouanymore" is a slow-burning ballad, "bellyache" rides a bright acoustic strum, "COPYCAT" opens the record on a sneer, and "&burn" brings in Vince Staples. Seven of the nine songs were released as singles.
"ocean eyes" and "idontwannabeyouanymore" both later reached the Billboard Hot 100. The EP peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and No. 12 in the UK, and has gone platinum in the US and triple platinum with ARIA in Australia.
